sisters, celebs, and going platinum

I got my hair did this weekend (by my sister!! because she's the best ever!!).

And yes, that means I get my hair cut in my parents' den. But what can ya do? Her salon is near Savannah. I live near Athens. That's a five hour drive, for those of you unfamiliar with Georgia geography (shame). So we take advantage of a weekend when we're both visiting home.

Sarah is the only person who understands what I mean when I say make me look like Zooey Deschanel. She can translate that onto my head. I don't know why I ever bother trying to find other acceptable hair stylists. They never measure up. She's been cutting my hair since she was in MIDDLE SCHOOL (trust me, she had no formal schooling at that point)...no one else will ever be as good as she is.

I asked for Zooey:

Sarah makes me Zooey:

With much less-awesome brown eyes. Which Sarah and I are sure to rag our mother about (my dad has blue eyes, so this is all Mom's fault, clearly).

Anyway. I love my new 'do. (And it looks awesome straight, too.) (And my head is SO MUCH LIGHTER!! I have really thick hair and she cut about half of it off. But it's still long!) But guess what we discovered?

May I introduce you to my first official gray hair? Thirty years old, and wiser every minute. This guy's been hanging out in my bangs...I've been catching glimpses of him for the last couple weeks. He's a nice normal texture, though (not the crazy wonky gray hair that happens sometimes), so I'm leaving him be. I'll think of him as FREE HIGHLIGHTS, so what's not to love about that? Sarah says he isn't really gray, he's pure white. Which is probably the most awesome thing ever, so you can just feast your jealous eyes on that beauty and think about how sweet it's going to be when I'm pure platinum. A platinum Zooey. The world isn't even ready.

  2. Why didn't I get a sister who does hair?! Thinking of all the money I could save!

  3. I'm so jealous on two accounts: an awesome talented sister (I have 2 useless (only on the hair front) brothers) and your platinum highlight! Geez...my "sparkles", as I like to call them, are nasty grey in color and not nearly as glorious as yours. BTW...your hair looks amazing!

  4. Love, love, love haircut!! One gray hair...I wish! If I pulled all of my gray hair I'd be bald!

  5. Looks GREAT and don't worry about grey hairs! It's just a symbol for us being mature, grown, wise women! I haven't found one yet, but with a kid I'm sure i'll see Mr. Grey soon!

  7. Hi Zooey, er, I mean Erika! I'm so jealous that your sister is a hairdresser!! You look great :)

  8. Your concept of the gray hair equaling free highlights is similar to my calling a rainy day a free carwash... we're such optimists, aren't we? :) Cute new look!

  9. PS - In reference to Allison's comment, why didn't I get a sister who's a Reproductive Endocrinologist? Think of all the money I could have saved...

  10. I'm LOL at Amanda's second comment!

Welcome to the gray hair club!! I have a million. For reals. But unlucky for me they are the crazy unruly type that take on a completely different texture. Awesome. If by chance you find more - don't pull them out!! My stylist said that is the worst thing to do. So instead I use a black sharpie. :) If only I was kidding.

  16. Oh my gosh, I LOVE your hair! Second thing, I like how you call your first gray hair a "he"- ha ha! I get them from time to time and they are always wiry and wonky... yeesh!

  17. Love the style! A hair dresser of mine pointed out a grey hair a few years ago. Now I just get highlights all the time to cover it up. I love that your sister does your hair! She did a wonderful job making you look like zoey!

  18. Hey Zooey -- When did you take over Erika's blog?!?!

Also, Dave used to name his grey hairs after what was stressing him out. Eventually they were all named "PhD Thesis Writing!"

  19. I have a lot of grey hairs on my temple and by my ears, and I am constantly battling to dye the crap out of them.

I found my first grey EYEBROW last week. WHAT THE WHAT?

  20. LOVE the new cut!

I found my first gray at age 16. I'm 32 now and have to dye my hair every 6 weeks just to stay brunette!!

  21. Cute hair! I got my first gray (well, FOUND my first gray, anyway) at 15. You are in mighty fine shape to only have ONE at age 30...what is your secret?! Mine is pure white/shimmery and I decided at age 24 to let my big streak of it just grow out. My way of embracing it! I do dye the rest of my hair every couple of months...not ready to embrace all the random sprinkles just yet :)

  22. Your title made me think you dyed your hair. Very cute cut.
