blates, happy hours, and my new calling

Happy Friday!! Today's a particularly happy one because it begins the week-plus of daily Starbucks Frappuccino Happy Hours! Half price frapps? I think yes. Naturally my co-workers and I will be there the minute happy hour begins today. A fantastic way to finish off the work week slash begin the weekend!

Yesterday's blogger lunch date (blate!) was fantastic (as though there were any doubt)!
So far my 'are blog friends as great in real life as they seem on their blogs?' experiences are 100% positive. Matt's like what do you TALK about? Isn't it WEIRD? and it's like...no! It's NOT weird at all! I mean, it's not like a blind date or meeting with someone you barely know...it's merely a formality that this is the first time we've met face to face...but we've been friends and regularly in touch for quite a long time! We know what's going on in each other's lives! It's just a different medium, but the relationship carries on just the same! So anyway. Once again I prove that all people you meet on the internet do not turn out to be serial killers. Shockingly.

At any rate- Amanda's having surgery today (same surgeries and doctor as me!) so if you have a minute, say a prayer that a) she doesn't freak out, and b) she doesn't die. Those are her main concerns, which seem pretty reasonable to me!

So yesterday I came across the best thing ever (for me): an entertainment webpage hiring freelance writers/bloggers to write episode recaps of summer reality shows. Wanna know a few of the shows they're specifically looking for? Oh, how 'bout The Bachelorette and Real Housewives of New Jersey?? I KNOW! Have I or have I not basically spent my whole life preparing for this honor??! Here's the tricky part, though: to apply you have to send in a cover letter (not hard), link to recent writing samples (haha, not hard), and resume (possibly hard). Obviously I have my normal resume I use(d) when applying for full-time jobs. But this is different...this is for a freelance writing gig. I don't have any writing gigs on my resume, nor have I ever written professionally or in any capacity that would make sense on a resume (unless we're listing small-beans personal blogs on resumes now, which I assume we're not...)...so...what to do? Any ideas? I mean, I have a very good idea of what kind of writing they're looking for (duh, you can just go read their current stuff, current show reviews, etc) and the job description/'application' makes it clear it's just freelance, no-contracts, pay-per-episode work...so maybe the resume is just a formality and they don't really care what's on it as long as you can prove elsewhere (in your cover letter and writing samples) that you can get the job done? Who knows. But if you know, then help a girl out. Because clearly getting paid to blog about reality TV for a legit webpage is my calling.

Alright. Only six more hours til Frapp Happy Hour. We can do this. Happy Friday!

  1. Wow I can't believe I'm the first commenter. I agree that is totally your calling. Check out Reality Steve- his recaps of Bachelorette/Bachelor are hilarious! Can't help you on the resume thing- but I would totally hire you!

  2. Interesting that you have met two blog friends named Amanda in real life... or maybe not that interesting since it was the 3rd most popular name the year I was born (which is the year after you were born, in case you forgot).

And good luck with your new job venture!

  4. So cool that you got to meet a blog friend. I've never had a "blate" and can't wait until my first one. Assuming it ever happens :) By the way, I have three "a's" in my name just like the Amandas do. Just sayin'...

And I would send in your regular resume but emphasize any writing you've done in your regular jobs. But I'm not an expert so if you completely ignore that advice I completely understand.

    And I'm praying for Amanda...

  7. My name is Amanda, and I've never had a blog date either! Too bad I live so far from Atlanta (hello, road trip!)

I think you should do everything in your power to make that freelance gig work. I can tell you as a "professional writer" (meaning people actually pay me to do it) that resumes are kind of secondary to writing samples. And writing about stuff you actually care about? So awesome! Not even like work at all! Plus, you're a really good writer. And that's my *ahem* professional opinion. I'd hire ya :)

  8. I only have had one experience with a blate and it was with you. And you didn't murder me or be mean to me, so I considered it a REAL SUCCESS. ;)

Just kidding - happy Friday to you!!

  9. I always loved Starbucks trips on Fridays with my co-workers! (It was a little dangerous that we had one right across the parking lot from our office.)

Also, I think instead of a resume, you should just send in your video of the acrobatics you performed recently... that should speak for your talents all by itself.

  12. You and Amanda sort of look alike... Maybe it's the bangs? I'm jealous you both can pull that look off, by the way!! Glad you had a great blate :)

  13. That is SO your calling! I'm pretty sure it's in the Bible too, doesn't Paul list writing about reality TV as on of the spiritual gifts? Well he should have. Love the "blate" photo. I want my bangs back so we could be triplets! Happy Frapday!

  16. Glad to know Matt thought I might be a serial killer to a stalker… I never actually thought of that, which is weird, because I assume everyone on the internet is a creeper. Thanks for a fun lunch… just what I needed before surgery day!

  17. TOTALLY your calling! Just say in your cover letter that if they read your blog they will SEE you were born for this!

Love it. So glad she wasn't a serial killer! People who don't blog don't get it! I mean... this isn't a blind date! It's a girlfriend you've connected with. It's like a pen pal, back in the day, before email & blogging. ;)
