deep thoughts on being sick and important TV shows

...but two can keep a secret when one of them is dead!

How's that for an inspirational opening quote? If I weren't so lazy, I could have superimposed it over a stunning landscape or something and it could have gone viral on Pinterest....or not. Actually it's just the end of the little intro montage thingy for Pretty Little Liars. I watched 13 episodes of that yesterday, so I saw the little montage 13 times. It's really creepy. And awesome. And stuck in my head, clearly.

I had a cyst rupture late Tuesday night, so I've been stuck in bed since then. It's been probably about a year since my last cyst episode...which is GOOD!! For the last few years prior to that, I'd had ruptures pretty regularly every few months. It was miserable. But NONE for the last year. So I can't complain too much. But I think that the time off has made me wimpier or something. This one TOOK. ME. OUT. If I were wearing a pedometer yesterday, I bet it would reveal that I took about 40 steps total the entire day. I seriously do not get out of bed. Even being in bed, the pain is pretty much constant. I'd hoped I would feel better (enough) today to go back to work, but...no. Sitting upright is basically impossible. Plus I walk really slowly and weirdly (to minimize pain) and that means tons of people would notice and ask why I'm walking like that, and like....I know there shouldn't be shame involved with this...but it's still weird. I mean, if my voice is hoarse because I have strep throat, I don't feel weird about letting people know "sorry, can't talk much, step." But being unable to walk or sit properly because you had an ovarian cyst rupture is always a little awkward to explain.

Soooo...this is probably the most boring blog I've ever written, but I felt like I should do something 'productive' before I get back to watching Pretty Little Liars for the next 12 hours. I decided to pick a show that I knew Matt wouldn't want to watch or care about to marathon on these sick days...this definitely fits the bill. I love it!! What a perfect blend of beautiful people (ummm...hello, Ezra Fitz.), intriguing story lines, lovely clothing, mystery, and ridiculousness!  I think the REAL mystery that the directors or writers or whoever need to start focusing on is do high schoolers really wear that much makeup these days? Applied so perfectly?? Because it's blowing my mind. In a good way. If I could get out of this bed, I would totally be spending the day experimenting with my cosmetics in the bathroom. But alas...I cannot.

So before you go, do me a favor. I'm on my death sick bed, after all. The least you can do is entertain me. If you could relive your high school years as someone in the 'world' of a popular high school TV show (like...you'd be magically a part of whatever show it is you choose, but it would be real life and not a show anymore...but all the people from the show would still be there, acting the way they do on the show...), what would you choose? I'll go first. Obviously I'm wrapped up in PLL right now, but that's not what I'd choose-- too much drama. I'm leaning towards spending my high school years in Stars Hollow with Rory and the gang from Gilmore Girls. Small town life + preppy private school...count me in. Obviously I'd be BFF with Rory and Lorelei, I would take all of my meals at Luke's diner, but there would be some drama because I would TOTALLY 100% date Jesse. Okay. Now it's your turn! (P.S. You're welcome to join me in Stars Hollow if you wish, but I've already called dibs in Jesse, so...take that into consideration. Unless you want to start some drama...??)

  1. No worries, I'd take Dean over Jesse any day... see you in Stars Hollow!

Booooo for ruptured cysts! So sorry friend! It sounds miserable. I do feel like a stop by the store for some new Core ice cream should be in order for Matt... it's the least he can do since he doesn't have ovaries.

  2. I don't think there's a show that depicts my high school upbringing. My favorite show set in high school was Beverly Hills 90210. I wanted to be just like Tiffany Amber Thiessen's character, Valerie Malone. She was pretty, fun, and the boys liked her!

  3. Oh and damn ovaries!!! ;) Feel better!

  4. Ok, so GG is a good one. That would be fun. But I think only if you could be in Rory's family, right? No one is as cool as her and her mom, and I want that coolness. So I am going with the OC. Or maybe Dawson's Creek. But DC was overly depressing a lot. Hmmmm, maybe I need to pull out all the seasons and re-watch just to make sure now!

  5. Saved by the Bell, hands down.

Hope that mean ol' cyst leaves you alone and that you feel better soon!!

  6. I'm at a loss...I had no idea that I watched so little high school tv! Can I make it a movie and be Sloan in Ferris Bueller's Day Off?

  7. My friends and I watched PLL all the time in college! It took me several episodes though to figure out that they were "dressing" Ali in the montage. I would choose to be in the world of the OC!

  8. Oh, this is tough. I love high school shows. I'd pick the original 90210 or even the newer one. I always thought living by the ocean would be really amazing. Gilmore Girls is a good one. I call dibs on Dean!!

  9. I want to go back to Little House on the Prairie. Hands down. I wish I lived then. I want my daughter to grow up like that. I mean imagine how awesome things would be if the biggest thing she had to worry about was Nellie Olsen pulling out her hair ribbons. But if that didn't happen, I SO wanted to be Kelly Kapowski! I pink puffy heart Zac!

Oh and on the Pretty Little Liars front - my daughter's dance studio did a dance to that song and it was amazeballs! If I can find a video, I'll send it to you to entertain you and maybe it will inspire you to do a dance as well.

    1. I was thinking Little House too! That's my favorite. Or Avonlea, which I also loved.

  10. So sorry about your pain! Hope PLL can take your mind off of it. What did we exist without Nexflix? I know that was just last week for me but how did I live without it? Almost time for my lunch break Scandal episode.

And I would totally be the girl that fixes bad boy Dylan McKay on 90210.

  11. Hands down I would go to Sunnydale High School and be part of the Scooby Gang with Buffy, Xander and Willow. Also I love PLL too. We finally know who A is....I think anyways.

  12. I would so join you in Stars Hollow!!! I had a marathon on Tuesday while I had a snow day at home! If you insist on Jess then I'll settle for Dean! I could go for some fries at Luke's right about now.

  13. Saved by the Bell is my pick for sure! Happy to hear the cysts have been kind over the last year. Tell that new one to hit the road.

  14. Man, what an excellent question you have posed here... I think it would be a toss up for me between 90210 (oh how I loved Brandon - and MIGHT have been a little too much like Andrea - in high school) or "Dawson's Creek."

On another note, welcome to the PLL dark side. I'm about two seasons in now. When I was watching, I was OBSESSED. But, now I'm taking a short sabbatical because the stress was beginning to be too much for me (and my dumb high school kids gave away who A is). I'll pick up soon! :)

  15. Great call on Gilmore Girls, but I would prob have to go with Dawson's Creek. And even though he was a total screw-up, I would have to date Pacey!

Sorry about the cyst- that sucks and is not a fun excuse to be stuck in bed :o/ Hope you (and your ovaries) feel better soon!

  16. I know that this makes me sound like a huge geek...but ....I love PLL....and like half of all ABC Family shows. I also have read all the books. When they come out I devour them in like a day.
And I on that note, I would choose the ABC family series Greek...which was actually set in college....but I would totally be the main characters bestie. Yes I know I am 31 and that's sort of lame, but whatever.
I am so sorry about your cyst. I hope you feel better soon!

    1. You made me feel so much better. I love ABC Family and CW shows. Greek is a great one! I'd be Casey and you'd be my best friend. :)

  17. stupid ovarian cysts!! I hope you and your ovaries feel better soon!

  18. Well, BEING a character is way different than being in that world. But I would totally be Blair from Gossip Girl. Yes, she was kind of a b***h, but she wore the most beautiful clothes and HELLO CHUCK BASS. However, if I had to BE a part of that world, but not as Blair, I probably wouldn't choose GG. Probably something closer to Saved By The Bell.

  19. 7th Heaven all the way. Lucy and I would get along great, but I'd totally be her, if I had to be a character. I think I've wanted to be her since middle school, so I didn't have to think too hard on this question.

  20. That really sucks about the csyt. Sounds super ouchy.

So I have a secret too and hopefully telling it won't kill one of us. I've been doing some marathoning of my own and reading your blog archives which are so hilarious, thoughtful and fun to read. And now I feel like I know so much about you (while you know nothing about me) that it's creeping me out and I have to post a comment so that I don't feel like some weirdo stalker. I'm a friend of Natasha's (no idea how to do a link in this comment box) and have checked out your blog every so often over the last year or so, but now I'm hooked! :-)

Anyway, hope you're back on your feet soon, but not before you get your fill of PLL (love that show!)

  21. uhh Boy Meets World! Definitely! Or maybe Ready or Not...do you even remember that show? Does anyone? Definitely not Degrassi (old or new) or Dawsons Creek...too much drama!

I've been there with the cyst! Yuck....hey that's makes us cysters, right? My cysta from anotha mista...

I hope this one is the last bad one you have to deal with for a long, long, long time!

  22. Dawson's Creek for sure. And if it's college life, Felicity. Feel better!!

  23. So sorry the last two days have been so unpleasant! Feel better soon! As far as shows go, I'd have to go with Saved By The Bell. My sister & I watched reruns every day after school & competed to see who could identify the episode first. With that background, I think I could navigate my way through Bayside High, no problem :)

  24. I'm sorry to read about your cyst rupture :(. Have you watched Dallas? I'm hooked!

  25. I'm sorry your body is being MEAN! I hope you are better soon. My choices would be 7th Heaven or Saved by the Bell. I call dibs on Zach, but I gotta say Slater isn't too bad especially in the college years. ;)

  26. Ugh, so sorry about the cyst. I agree with the others who said Bayside High!

  27. I'm sorry about the cyst rupture. I am glad you haven't been experiencing them as often (yay). I hope this is the last one forever.
you're question caused me to look up other teen shows for nostalgia sake which led me to this treasure trove: http://www.buzzfeed.com/summeranne/the-33-best-forgotten-teen-shows-of-the-90s

  28. duh. GG all the way. And there is totally a Buzzfeed quiz that goes something like, "which GG guy do you belong with." I didn't even have to take the quiz to know it would be Jess...because I totally would've slanted all my questions to make sure I got him. I have a totally made up episode (okay, couple of episodes) of GG in my head that is like 5 years after the finale, where Jess and Rory reconnect (obvs cause they are both in the literary/journalistic world.) Jess writes a short novel that becomes a best seller, and Rory is sent to interview him for the NY times. And they fall in love (again) but as mature adults that know they belong together. They get married and have the most beautiful children in the world. As their children get older they seek a slower pace of life and move from NYC back to Stars Hollow. And now begins the next generation of Gilmore Girls. These imaginary GG episodes bring me great satisfaction.

  29. I'm so sorry about your cyst rupture! :( That is awful! I have been in so much pain yesterday & this morning with this miscarriage. I had no idea it would be so painful? I don't know why. But i got some meds & they were working... and now i'm waiting for some to kick in again!

I have heard so much about PLL. I am intrigued! :)

    Hope you feel better soon!

  30. Hope you're feeling better. I thought for sure you exceeded your maximum cyst-rupture quota for one lifetime. That is just not fair. Pretty Little Liars is great to pass the time though. I marathoned through it when I was recovering from my hysteroscopy and HSG a couple summers ago. I still watch it sometimes, but it's really very confusing! My top tv show was the original Beverly Hills 90210. Of course I would be Brenda, during the Luke Perry/Dylan McCay romance of '92. Looking back, I don't know exactly what it was about him because those side burns were out of control, but he did have a cute little convertible Porsche and with my recent car troubles, that alone is appealing.

  31. ouch ouch ouch . . . . so sry you are having to to through this kind of pain.
    What a -great- question.

Hmmmm my fav tv HS show/ past guilty pleasure was Gossip Girl(pretty clothes and the first two seasons were good) but actually participating in that high school life seems a bit too stressful to actually partake in.

  32. GG is such a good call. . . if not that then I would pick Boy Meets World. Would totally love to be BFF with Topanga!

  33. I LOVE PLL. I just started re-watching the series with a friend who hasn't seen it before and I was blown away with all the stuff these high schoolers are doing! It feels way different watching it as a high school teacher than it did watching it the first time asa college kid. Regardless, still love the show.

I'm with you on Gilmore Girls, I totally would have been right by Rory's side because I'm kinda a nerd like that. Plus I would have loved to hang out with her mom, they just seem like so much fun! I also am tempted to choose gossip girl because that life just looks so exciting and different than what I experienced. Two different worlds for sure.

Glad you're feeling better! Happy Friday!

  35. Um, PLL is my guilty pleasure and I'm not ashamed!!!!! My teacher friends all watch it too, so I get serious joy chatting it up during lunch each week. Hope you are feeling better!

  36. I'm assuming your cyst has healed (what can we do to just make them GO AWAY and LEAVE YOU ALONE??? Anything? Send chocolate, more PLL episodes, etc???) by now since I am way behind on my blog reading. I would totally live in Stars Hollow with you but I'd date Dean so no drama there :)

  37. If I ever have a grand mansion type of house situation, I am going to name it Stars Hollow, and it is going to be inspired by this blog since I've never seen Gilmore Girls.
