good enough for him, good enough for me

I'm working on getting Matt's Walking Dead extra interview together. But in the meantime, let's chat about something cleaner, shall we??

Body wash.

(Nope, not a sponsored review or post. Just a current passion.)

The preppy fashion and mommy bloggers have all but beaten the word obsession to death. I can't even think it without rolling my eyes. So we're just going to say I'm a big fan of these products. Not obsessed, because that would be lame. Just really enthused.

So before Millie was born, I was focusing on registering for and buying the things we'd need for her to come home. Baby bath products were on the 'buy now' list, since I assumed she'd need to be cleaned before we'd be able to have a baby shower. At one point in my life I was really interested in researching and analyzing and comparing every single product and thing related to babies, but at this particular time, I was long past that point. I just needed to get some stuff without expending too much emotional energy getting it. But I still had standards- when it came to bath products, I didn't want weird-chemical-filled and artificially-fragranced crap. I don't put that stuff on my skin; I certainly don't want to put it on an infant's skin. So I knew I couldn't just waltz into Target and buy the first thing I saw on the shelf.

I made the logical decision to just ask my coworker/friend who has a baby and appropriately hippie standards. Ooooooohhh!!! she said when I asked. I love what we use!! It's ummm...yellow. You can get it at Target. I don't know what it's called, but it says 'frankincense and myrrh' on the front of it. It smells awesome and it doesn't have a bunch of weird stuff in it.

I asked what frankincense and myrrh smelled like- she said that she couldn't describe it, but it was great. Unusual, but great. And so it was decided- off to Target I went, searching for the baby body wash that was yellow with frankincense and myrrh. I couldn't help but smile at those two ingredients. I mean...frankincense and myrrh?? This is like the body wash Jesus would use or something.

Sure enough- there it was. And now flash forward to present day and you can go ahead and note that the bottle is half empty because IT IS SO DAGGUM AMAZING. I feel happy just thinking about this body wash. I go to the bathroom multiple times a day just to smell it. No wonder the Wise Men took Jesus gifts of frankincense and myrrh. They knew what was up. It's freaking awesome.

Not long after my discovery of this amazingness, I discovered that this brand ALSO has a whole line of adult bath products!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Those exclamation points are a mere shadow of my real-life excitement. I caused a scene in Target, I'm afraid. There are body washes! Lotions! Hair masques! Massage oils!! I need it all!! I can be scent-twinsies with my baby! (And stop borrowing her shower gel...) I can use the body wash that Jesus would use!

I finally got some this past weekend (I had to use up my other shower gel first, wahhhh). For the record, I got it at Ulta- they also carry the line, and the products appear to be mostly the same (or comparable) prices. But at Ulta you can use your $3.50 off $10 purchase coupon (plus earn points), soooo...Ulta wins this one. I'm happy to report that the adult version doesn't disappoint. It's even better because it's super moisturizing. I seriously spend all day long looking forward to taking my shower so that I can use it. It's kind of sad, really. Or maybe not.

Just like the baby version, it's free of lots of sketchy things.

So this is possibly the most boring post I've ever written, but I just felt like I'd be doing you a disservice not to alert you to this most holy of bath products. Frankincense and myrrh, folks. If it's good enough for Jesus, it's good enough for me. Also, now my Christmas list is started and finished. EVERYTHING THIS BRAND MAKES. Done.

  1. This is a really important topic! We started with Mustela, which I liked but didn't LOVE for the price. Then moved to Aveeno because we got a lot as a gift. THEN, my friend who reps for BeautyCounter (a whole line of products committed to avoiding anything unsafe) told me about their kids' wash and I was like "AAAH, have to have it." The other day I got JB's Aveeno in my eyes and it BURNED, so I said "that's it! I can't use this on my precious baby!" and that was my excuse to go buy the BC products (which smell amazing.) Now, I can't waste the Aveeno, so I'm making James use it. hahahah.

  2. Ooh I'll have to check it out. I've been trying to cut back on our chemicals in products.

  3. Hey, thanks for the PSA! I'm pretty dang excited to schedule a shopping trip to Target this weekend because a) I love new bath products and b) I'm such a sheep. You say I should try it, so who am I to argue? I draw the line at jumping off a bridge with you because I'm terribly afraid of heights, but I will most definitely follow you down a Target aisle. Keep the baby beauty tips coming! :-)

  4. So essentially you're answering WWJD with "shower with Shea Moisture"... I like it. And, if ever I'm in the predicament to wonder "what should I wash my baby with?" you'll have done the hard work for me.

    1. This is basically exactly what I was going to say. For, say, 2014 years (minus the years when he was available for questioning), people have been asking WWJD? and then deciding that J would D exactly what they wanted to do in the first place. But now we know what J would D! He'd wash himself with frankincense and myrrh?
(I'm a pagan baby, now wondering if that was sacrilegious.)

  5. Actually, this was a really useful post. I needed to get my baby something different this winter for her skin. But everytime I try to research, I get overwhelmed. I am off to buy this stuff this weekend. Thanks!

  10. I'm pretty sure Jesus also used Target brand diapers, so I'm going to stick with those as well. #WWJD

  12. Soooo, I don't wanna blow your mind or anything, but Target carries a shamefully small amount of the Shea Moisture brand you pictured!! No seriously...they used to carry more, but then they cut back, (I assume because it's semi-expensive, but not full of junk, so I think it's worth it!)...the Teal lotion of avocado-marula lotion is absolutely scent-tastic. They have good shampoos too...the Baobab thickening one is in my shower at the moment. Go to amazon and get to ordering, you! Or, if you're like me and you like to stick your nose in any body products before you buy them, I've seen the Shea Moisture ones at Walgreens, Whole Foods, and Publix. I don't wanna brag, but my coworker is from the Bronx and she said she knew the original lady who would peddle that stuff out of big vats. (Side note, I also have a slight connection to the Boudreaux Butt Paste guy too.) Weird.

    1. I couldn't find your email address to respond to you directly, Adrienne- I hope you see this!! :) But YES- once I noticed the SheaMoisture selection at Ulta (and even moreso at Ulta online)...I realized that Target is totally gypping us with their measly selection! Maybe they just have the 'gateway drug' selection and then the true addicts will dig deeper to find the rest of the line?? But I don't think I've smelled the avocado-marula lotion, so I will look for that- thanks!!

  13. Annnnd, one other thing I thought of. I used to live in ATL, so I would buy it there, but there's a brand called Honeysuckle Soap that's local to GA (duh)-- they have a really nice peach and almond scented lotion that's pretty great and a baby line too. I don't have a baby, but I live in Denver with stupid thin, dry air and the shampoos/soaps/lotions that help baby skin help me, plus I have a spoiled dog with dry skin, so I wash her in the most delicious baby shampoo that I can afford. Hoorah for my scrumptious-smelling dog!
*I also feel weird posting cuz I don't know you IRL...but I've read your blog cuz Mollyanne (who I DO know IRL) has hers linked to yours in magic blogging land. I LOVE your writing and your style. I sat in bed the other day and read your whole adoption story and sobbed all morning with happiness. So. Yeah. Not weird. Just happy. :)

    1. Awww thanks!! I don't think it's weird at all- I don't know 98% of my blog friends IRL, so no worries! I will have to look for that Honeysuckle Soap brand- where did you buy it??

You forgot the best part that it is Fair Trade! Made by women who support their families.

  15. So... Basically, I have the best advice on the planet. (You're welcome.) I also prefer not to buy products without raving reviews, so I'll be asking you about their other scents and test sniffing your hair.

  16. Okay, so I'm totally hoping that Target in Canada stocks this stuff because I want to smell like Jesus too! Ha ha ha!!! (Sadly, I'll probably have to stock up when I'm in the States next.)

I love comments almost as much as I love Mexican food. Seriously.
