let the people speak!

There's been a lot of good dialogue about commenting systems the past two days. I appreciate everyone's feedback and passion about the topic! Unfortunately, so far all of that dialogue has only served to muddy the waters for me as far as which system to stick with. Therefore I thought that the best thing to do would be to utilize that most democratic method of making decisions and put it to a vote.

We've had a few days to test it out. Hopefully you had a chance to respond in a thread and hit 'subscribe' and see what happened. Maybe you discovered that you were previously a 'no-reply' person and you've fixed that! Wherever you are in your personal blog commenting journey, I hope that you will take your experiences and beliefs and VOTE! Because we all know I can't just make a decision on my own. That would be insane.

So here's the one-question survey I created! Lucky for everyone, you can check as many boxes as you feel you need to. I know it can be really limiting to only be able to choose one thing, so I wouldn't put you through that. Also, I'm guessing you could vote as many times as you wanted (don't think there's any way to limit that?). I would ask that you keep your number of votes proportionate to your passion for that vote. If you really don't care, vote once. If you have a REALLY HUGE AMOUNT OF LOVE for one side, you probably should vote a couple extra times. Isn't this the fairest way? Per this system, I would have voted zero to one times in each of the last 10 elections about politicians and eleven times to legalize Sunday alcohol sales. Same thing. (Which even with me only voting once, Sunday sales passed, so BOOYAH. But I've digressed.)

Now, vote! Let your voice be heard!! Be the master of your own commenting destiny (here, anyway)!! And may the best commenting system win!

Also, as a reward for voting, I'm not going to give you something lame, like a sticker...come on, seriously? I feel really confident all of you are older than three and are basically not impressed by stickers. I think your prize will be some kind of awesome neon workout clothing. And some Mexican food. Basically two of the greatest loves of my life. Am I generous or what?

PS. I love surveys. I think I need more surveys on this blog. What do you want to be surveyed about next?

  5. Mission accomplished. But only because I like you--it is way too early for tests and I still don't like making decisions! I haven't had this much anxiety about choosing the right answer since coloring in those bubbles on a scantron sheet in high school!

Looks like we've got the chips and salsa taken care of...now could you please pass the pitcher of margaritas? I could use one after all of that stress!

    1. Margaritas are in the mail. And since you only live like 40 miles away, they might even still be cold when they get to you!!

  6. I wish I was skilled enough in smoke signals and pigeons to send you this message. Voted!

    1. I feel like the American education is failing us...hardly ANYONE is proficient in carrier pigeons and/or smoke signals these days...

  8. Haha some of your answers were so funny, I wanted to vote more than once! Truthfully, I don't care how to comment, but typing in the code drives me nuts. Although I do understand the spam thing, so I try to not complain too much.

    1. Thanks, I'm thinking about starting a new career as a survey-answer-writer!! :) Maybe next week I will try removing the word verification thing. I know it's super obnoxious. But too many changes in this week already!!!

  9. Voted! More importantly I think this debate helped fix my creepy "no-reply" status! I am lover of all Mexican food and neon workout clothing...both are solid choices!

    1. Girl-- you are still showing up as 'no-reply' for me!!!! Does my computer subconsciously hate you??! Scary!!!

    2. Seriously it does! I comment using Google so that might be the issue.

  10. I voted. And remember I sent you cookies once :) However I will settle for neon clothing because than maybe I would like Zumba more as neon is obviously an unwritten requirement for it!

    1. I have never forgotten the cookies. I think maybe you are Matt's favorite blog friend of mine because of those. :)

    1. I was not able to see the results after I voted. I will comment either way. I like this way though because of the discussion.

    2. Ooooh so it's a mystery about who is winning, then!!! Mwah ha ha.

    3. Nope, not able to see the results. That's ok though because I still really don't get it all.

    1. HOW DID I NOT KNOW THAT YOU WERE IN THE ARMY??!??!! Sorry, that really called for all-caps. Who are you, woman, and why do you have a secret past??!!

  13. I voted. Clearly I am expecting neon workout clothes, since a) I have easy access to Mexican food via the hubs and b) you know the sad state of my current workout attire. I will be watching the mail!

  14. Is it wrong that I put way more thought into voting for this (equally important and timely) survey than I did in the last election? I think not! Erika for president! Free guac for everyone!

    1. Not at all weird...obviously I care very much about my 'constituents' (hahaha) opinions and have a highly improved voting system, so it's only natural!!

  15. Ok, here are my opinions:

I have always used threaded comments. I've heard from family and friends that they like to see my replies to other people's comments. Also, by replying on my blog, it shows everyone that I reply. Sometimes I go to blogs where I see lots of comments but no replies and I wonder if the blog author replies by email or just doesn't reply at all... I want my readers to know I will reply to their comments so I reply on my blog.

The inflated comment count doesn't bother me. In fact, if anything it inflates my ego ;)

As some other commenters said, if I left a comment with a question or a really good point, I will go back and check if the author replied. If I just left a small comment or something that's not important, I don't bother.

I am REALLY interested to see the result of your survey!

    1. Your reasoning is all really good!!! Sheesh!! :) Except for the inflated comment count. That is REALLY bothering me at present. Maybe I'd get used to it? Who knows. Ha.

      Delete
    2. Also, just another item of reasoning since the survey has decided I'm maxed out (3? That doesn't adequately display my feelings! add another vote for me) I know how you love your google analytics... It's going to be grossly over stating your pageviews due to the number of times I have to check back to see if you commented! Skewed numbers=bad business. Wah, wah.

      Delete
    3. Well now, to be PERFECTLY technical...the pageviews would still be accurate. They WILL increase, but each time you come back to check...that is legitimately a new page view. However probably my number of 'unique vistors' will stay the same, because it's not a new PERSON (or IP address, rather) coming. So like yesterday I had 190 'unique visitors' (people) with a total of 478 pageviews, so obviously most people came (or clicked around) more than one time. And who knew you would max out at 3??! That doesn't seem enough. Even Dancing with the Stars lets you vote like 10 times or something, and this is clearly way more important than that!!! Ha.

      Delete
    4. How do you know the # of unique visitors??

p.s. this is a perfect example of how if I hadn't seen your reply to Amanda, I wouldn't have a further question ;)

      Delete
    5. I've installed Google Analytics, which tells you numbers of all KINDS of crazy things (including unique visitors)...have you used that, Gypsy Mama??

      Delete
  16. I voted!! I'll be waiting on my neon attire. Please note I prefer pink!!

    ReplyDelete

    1. Obviously you have great taste in neon!

      Delete
  17. I don't think that I have a preference, I didn't even know there were options! i like how you can reply right on the page && that i can see your replies to other people (maybe i'm just nosy...). maybe i'm talking myself into an opinion. anyways good luck making this decision, it seems like it's a big one! :]

    1. Haha...I think you I'm putting WAY too much time and thought into this non-issue, but thanks for playing along!! ;)

  18. Woah. I'm blown away by all the options.

I love comments almost as much as I love Mexican food. Seriously.
