that timely morsel of Spanish

We had a pretty solid weekend, despite the OMG WILL IT EVER STOP RAINING THIS SUMMER weather.

No, but seriously. This is the least Georgia-like summer I have ever experienced. It rains ALL OF THE TIME. Every single day. And it's barely even hot. At least it's still super humid. Otherwise I might think we had actually all been transported to some weird alterna-universe or something. The humidity is the only thing normal and comforting about the weather so far. But anyway.

We kicked off Saturday morning with a couple hours of athleticism. I was so pumped about my outfit that I took a picture. I was going to get you to guess what sport I was participating in (based on the clues from my sports fashion post), but then I realized that I very un-subtly included a couple big ol' clues in the picture. So basically, if you can't guess what sport I was playing, I will have to declare that you are Not Smart.

My game was crap, but at least I looked legit, right? I think I trick people at the tennis court. "She looks like a contender. Look at her smart outfit! She must be really goo--OH GOD LOOK AT HER TRYING TO SERVE!!!!! THE HORROR!!!!" It's pretty great. Not.

We've been playing tennis at a covered court, which is convenient since it typically rains about 80% of the time. Despite the relatively cool weather, we still get pretty hot and sweaty running around, so we decided to keep our pre-planned pool date with our friend Kristin afterwards.

It was around this time (noonish, on a Saturday in July) that the un-Georgia-ness of the weather really hit me. I was shivering in my bathing suit. There were chill bumps involved. It was ridiculous. But even though it wasn't hot (and barely warm), we still enjoyed a few hours of reading, relaxing, and good conversation. And floating...which was surprisingly non-miserable, since the water was warmer than the air.

I've been reading Peace Like a River for several weeks. It is SO GOOD...the writing is absolutely beautiful, and the story is excellent. But for some reason I'm reading it really slowly. This is very unlike me-- normally I DEVOUR books, even crappy ones. They last me like...a day. Two, tops. When I start a book, I just don't stop reading until it's done. So I've never had a book like this where I'm content to read a few pages and put it down. Pick it back up a day or two later, read for half an hour, put it down. Normally I would only do this if it were a book I really wasn't enjoying, and eventually I'd quit trying, but that's really not the case here. I love it. So I have no good explanation. But I seriously find myself getting obsessed with random sentences every few chapters or so...Leif Enger is obviously a poet at heart. But this particular sentence I read at the pool wasn't especially poetic, but it was super funny and true and I've been stuck on it all weekend.

...nothing expressing contempt like a timely morsel of Spanish. THAT. That is genius. And true. And if I ever write a book, I want to write amazing sentences like that.

Now that I've probably 90% blown your mind with literature, I'm going to finish off the last 10% with something else rather amazing I came upon this weekend. A sign in a store window:
And...yes, you read it right. This was a sign in the window of a Brazilian Wax store. Sooooo...yeah. Matt's thinking about applying...in addition to earning some extra fun money, can you imagine how good that would look on his resume? Exactly. Happy Monday, peeps. And if you're not satisfied in your current career...there's always this. Ay yi yi.

    1. Thanks! Totally agree-- looking good and having fun counts for a lot more than actually being good. :)

  3. You make tennis look so fun, easy, and fashionable! You've made me want to take up tennis again! And by "take up tennis again" I mean "try to remember the very few skills I managed to pick up in the ONE class I took in college." :)

  4. OMG with this weather. Enough already! I mean, it's hard to appreciate cooler temps when you haven't seen the sun in 3 weeks. It truly feels like we've been transported to another state. Or another month. J read last week that it was the first time since 1991 that it had rained 17 straight days in Athens. Which is now up to at least 21. And we're now past 80% of our annual rainfall. So basically I'm impressed that you managed any pool time at all.

  5. I just love that the wax place obviously chose a very small font size for the disclaimer, almost as if they were even ashamed that such a position existed (as they should be)...

  7. My mind is reeling about what kind of mascot could possibly be associated with a Brazilian wax place... Wow. Just wow. I'm already embarrassed for the person who gets that job!

And seriously, the rain. Enough is enough already!! But at least you guys can get some training in by swimming to work, right??

  9. It's going to be like 3489034 degrees this week with no rain in sight so far. This summer is just full of weird weather! The only times I haved played tennis, I see how hard I can hit the ball. But you're making it seem pretty fun so I'm thinking about dragging Peter out there with me to try it out the correct way! I hope the next time you pass by it there actually is a mascot cause I'm really curious about what it would be now!

  10. Let it be known that I did not wear my TOMS at all this weekend, so any rain you may have received is most certainly NOT my fault!

Sounds like a great weekend! Happy Monday!

  11. You totally look like a pro, perfect outfit! PLEASE send some rain here to S.E. TX, we need it! If you look at the radar right now of Texas it looks like lots of rain but it seems like where ever I am it's dry...crazyness I tell ya.

  12. THANK YOU! Finally someone else has read Peace Like a River. It's one of my favorite books of all time. But I had the same strange experience of reading it slowly, but always coming back to it. I've never had that happen before.

  14. I'm guessing your sport of choice was rock climbing!No...hummmm...I thought that was the only sport! You look fantastic. I saw that mascot posting on instagram and just about peed my pants!

  15. I do believe I got a little more tan in the few cloudy hours. :) Totally worth it. Plus, I think there are endorphins released when you are floating in a pool. That's my theory anyway.

  16. Read that book back in HS or college and remember liking it! Good stuff :)

  17. I AM SO OVER THIS RAIN!!!! And I totally think God is laughing at me since last summer I was all like, GEEZ LOUISE give me a break on the heat. But still. I am over it.

Also, I cannot even imagine what that mascot would be!!

  18. What is the mascot of a waxing place?

I also devour books like no one else. Craig doesn't get it, he has literally been reading the same "beach book" about cowboys and Indians since we started dating 5 years ago.

  19. I'm jealous of all that rain! And your super fun tennis outfit, of course. Not of the waxing place mascot though.

  20. WOW! I really like the new blog layout. (Maybe I'm late but I just saw it today?)

Second... we are getting crazy rain too. It's making my yard a jungle.

YAY on great books! I can't find my Kindle and I'm getting mucho nervous about it!

Ummmmm... and I'm a'skeered to ask WHAT the character is. Is it a crazy super hairy something? You must follow up on this!

  21. Hi Erika - This is your fan that saw you in Target a few months ago, but was afraid to say hi. I had to comment on the mascot. I actually saw the mascot the other evening while eating at Chick-fil-a. It is the Pink Panther!

  22. Maybe I'll apply for that job if I don't get the one I'm currently hoping to get. It would be worth moving to another country for that job, right?!?!

Also, I love that you added commenting to your blog!

    1. ps. Did you WRITE in that book? Or is that electronic highlighting? And if you wrote in the book I hope it's not a library book because those are really expensive to buy. (Says the mom who recently bought TWO her son decided to "decorate." Urg.)

  23. Something we have in common: we both underline genius writing in the books we're reading. Sometimes, if it's especially good, I underline and star it. And if it's Annie Dillard, pretty much every page is highlighted, underlined, starred...within an inch of its life (which is an overused, un-creative phrase that I would not underline...which is why I haven't written a book).

  24. re. Job for holding a sign advertising a Brazilian wax. That . . . Could that be a joke?

The -ONLY- positive might be years in the future when a conversation turns to talking abt horrid jobs one took bz you really needed the money. "Winner Winner Chicken Dinner"

  25. You NEED to read The Emperor's Edge by Lindsay Buroker. It's so good, and full of humorous, true lines such as this!

  26. Can you send some of that rain to Colorado, where it's just burning all the time? First of all, you look amazing in a bikini, which makes me hate you. Second, I LOVE LOVE LOVE Peace Like a River. It's one of my top ten books, maybe even top five. It left me undone. Third, I really hope the mascot is a um...well..you know. A hooha.
