I hope you have that 'Let's Get it Started' (HEY!) song in your head now. Ha.
It's BIRTHDAY DAY! And it's barely started, but so far, so good!
In my little circle of close co-workers, we all plan little celebrations for each other's birthdays. Yesterday they informed me that today I should wear something 'fancy and borderline work-inappropriate.' They suggested sequins, uncomfortably high heels, and fancy hair (what, they don't like my ponytails?). Um...HOLLA. Those words speak to my heart. I always complain about never having opportunities to dress up fancy. Look at them...creating one!! They obviously know me well. Unfortunately, it's like 30 degrees today...my 'fancy' wardrobe is limited to start with, but being freezing cold definitely gave me an extra challenge to deal with.
So my day started with a longer-than-usual amount of time spent beautifying myself. Now that I'm 31...sheesh. It takes extra work to look fabulous, I guess.
I pulled out all of my lovely eye shadow pallets for inspiration. And then I tried to take a picture of my finished eyes. And that's really hard to do, actually. If I open my eyes up wide (so that I don't look drugged/weird), you can't really see my eyelids and you miss the point. If I close my eyes...well, those just look awful, plus the picture is all wonky cause I'm not actually LOOKING. Anyway. This was my best attempt at capturing today's artwork. Trust me, it's great. I used no less than 29 products per eyelid.
While I primped, Matt cooked. He has the day off (lucky punkface), so he fixed my favorite weekend breakfast, blimmies. I know I mentioned blimmies the other day and some of you said you were going to Google it to see what I was talking about. Here's the thing: I don't think Google knows what I'm talking about. Blimmies (the ones we eat) are an old family thing from my dad's parents' German (or Russian? something like that) neighbors. I'll tell you all about them later, but the stuff I saw on Google didn't seem much like what we eat. Here's a visual of today's breakfast:
They're a lot like crepes. And the traditional (in my family, anyway) dipping sauce is CORN SYRUP. Not even lying. Not maple syrup. CORN SYRUP. It's so awesome because it makes me a total hypocrite. Most of the time I'm reading labels, judging and eschewing products made with corn syrup. And then I eat blimmies and I'm like PASS THE CORN SYRUP SO I CAN EAT IT STRAIGHT-UP! It's amazing.
Then I came to work and now we're all up to date. I have yet to go upstairs and see my Fancy Coworkers (or get any pictures of my complete outfit/fanciness), so now I'm off to do that. Oh, and also, like...work. Right. Goodbye!!
PS. Can we all just take a moment and remember how much cooler it was last year when my birthday was on 12/12/12? Sigh.
Happy, happy birthday beautiful! I kind of thought the photo was a joke, like Matt accidentally grabbed the corn syrup instead of maple syrup... funniest thing ever. I'm not sure that I know what corn syrup tastes like by itself, but I'm guessing it's tasty! Enjoy your hypocritical self today!
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday!! Those look like blintzes? Is that close to what they are? Anyway...I'm glad you got a yummy breakfast and have a glamorous day!!
ReplyDeleteI looked up blintzes on Wiki and they look super similar!! Also they listed a bunch of the other words/names that they go by and one of them is 'blini'...which is super close to our 'blimmie,' which is no doubt just my grandparents' American/Texan interpretation/butchering of whatever their Russian neighbors were saying...and then handed down a couple generations! So I bet that you are right!!
DeleteHappy birthday! I fully agree with your decision for a fancy day, full make up and fun hair! Hope you have a great day celebrating. Praying 31 brings many blessings for you!
ReplyDeleteHappiest of Birthdays!! I hope it's every thing you dreamed it would be, and that it's your best one yet!

ReplyDeleteHappy birthday! Sounds like you're in for a great day.
ReplyDeleteYour eyes look awesome! And you can take that with a grain of salt because this is coming from the woman who owns precisely ZERO containers/packages/palettes of makeup of any sort :)
ReplyDeleteAlso, blimmies sound a lot like pflintzen, a German/Russian thin pancake-thing that we always ate with white sugar AND corn syrup when I was little. They are awesome!
Oh yeah, and Happy Birthday again :)
Happy birthday! I hope your co-workers planned a great day/night for you!
ReplyDeleteHappy Happy birthday to you Erika!!! I can not wait to see how your co-workers decorated for your birthday and I'm going to need a total run down of your fancy pants outfit! haha!

I'm blown away by the corn syrup dipping sauce.
ReplyDeleteAnd I'll TOTALLY be your photographer for makeup tutorials. We can do those instead of a fashion week. Too cold for that business right now.
Hope it was a great day!!! Can't believe Matt had the day off on YOUR birthday! That should be illegal!
