favorite steals

It's no great secret that over the past few years I've become a HUGE fan of makeup and beauty products. I mean- I've been using makeup for like...I don't know, 20 years? I think my mom started letting me wear Cover Girl face powder (in a shade that gave me a certain Ooompa Loompah-esque glow) in 6th grade or so, when I started having acne. But I didn't really care about makeup or have fun with it until much more recently. A few years ago I discovered Sephora (and then Ulta) and beauty blogs, and...well, buh-bye extra cash. Despite my enthusiasm for makeup and Ulta, though, I don't think I have any great skills or knowledge to impart. Sometimes one of yall will ask for a tutorial or tips and I feel entirely inadequate to do anything like that. I just like to buy stuff and have fun with it, but at the end of the day, I'm not really one to be creating fabulous "looks" or doing anything spectacular with all my products. I still just look like a normal person. With more expensive products. And I hopefully don't look as much like an Oompa Loompah as I used to. Ha.

ANYWAY! That's kind of neither here nor there, really. Not for today. Because today I want to share with you a few of the beauty 'steals' that I'm a huge fan of. I mean, I have to cut corners somewhere in order to afford my current love affair with $24 lip glosses, right? Right! So I've been trying to take mental notes the last few days of my favorite budget-friendly products-- and the great news is, I have a few things that I love and choose and actually prefer over higher-end counterparts. They may have started as a cost-cutting measure, but now they're repeat purchases because they're actually BETTER. And healthier. And cheaper! So let's get to it.

Before we get started-- if you don't live near a Trader Joe's, I'm really sorry. So, so sorry. My heart aches for you and what you're missing out on. I would suggest that you move near one at your earliest convenience. Unfortunately, they don't sell their own products online. Amazon sells some of their health and beauty stuff, but at RIDICULOUSLY MARKED UP prices...which really takes away from the savings you could be scoring. So if you find yourself desperate for any of the TJ products I'm talking about here, either a) make a road trip to your nearest TJ's and stock up, or b) maybe I'll be nice and be your personal shopper and ship it to you. Because I really think you should try this stuff.

Let's start with my favorite face wash.

I have bad skin, people. BAD. It's been bad for years. It hasn't shown signs of stopping its evil ways even though I'm in my 30s. I've tried every single drugstore product/system/potion over the years. And a few pricier, fancier products too. Sometimes things work for awhile. Sometimes they don't. But inevitably things get bad again. A couple of years ago I decided to try the oil cleansing method. The logic behind it made sense and I was willing to try just about anything, especially anything cheap and non-chemically.

I actually really liked the OCM. I did it for a few months and was really impressed with the results. And the cost. BUT then I got tired of it. It was a lot more time consuming and messy-- I like being able to wash my face in the shower and be done with it. I didn't like having to boil a kettle of water AFTER the shower and then make a mess of my sink with my water, wash cloths, oils, etc. It got tiresome. And so one day I was grocery shopping at Trader Joe's and thought I'd peruse the beauty products. I saw this stuff and took a few minutes to read the bottle:

Source
I wish I'd taken a picture of the ingredient label at home, but I didn't. Basically this is a blend of a bunch of different kind of oils, plant extracts, and...that's about it. It's not a blend of chemistry-experiment-sounding ingredients, like most face washes. Everything sounds like something you could find in a (large) garden. And that appealed to me. I was already semi-convinced that washing my face with oil, while sounding crazy, actually seemed to be working. And at this point in life (Bird Food Diet, anyone?) I was starting to try hard to avoid a lot of weird chemicals, both in my food and the stuff I touched and put on my body. So I figured-- why not? This stuff was cheap, maybe $5 or something...it seemed like it'd be worth a shot.

LOVE IT. My first impression of it wasn't great, I'll be honest. It smells WEIRD. Kind of masculine, really. It was a huge turn off. I like my products to SMELL GOOD, dangit! But I convinced myself to get over that: after all, what makes them smell good is CHEMICALS, okay? This smells like oils and essences and not man-made perfume, and that's fine. So now, a year or so later, the smell doesn't bother me-- but at first it did. But other than that, this has been a total winner. My skin has (knock on wood) never been consistently better. It seems to have found a balance between being oily and dry. It's not irritated and red. I still get zits sometimes, but they're way fewer and further between and they clear up much more quickly. The kicker is that I sometimes will deviate and use one of my old (drugstore) face washes-- mostly if I'm traveling, since this TJ's stuff packaging truly sucks for packing. And within a day or two my skin totally revolts. It starts getting freaky again. And so I rush home to this beloved cheap 'spa' cleanser, thankful I've found true facewash happily ever after.

As a bonus, this stuff takes off my makeup like. a. boss. Seriously. As I may have mentioned (?), I like wearing good makeup now. And primer. And my makeup STAYS (especially now that my face isn't so oily that the makeup slides off by lunchtime!). True story: if I just get in the shower and wash my face with some Clearasil or Neutrogena facewash, when I get out it still looks like I'm wearing my 'full face.' I mean, my mascara is probably smudging, but my eyeshadow will still be perfectly intact. But this TJ's facewash does a GREAT job of getting it off. I almost never still have makeup remnants after I get out-- and this is just from washing with the facewash, water, and my hands- I don't scrub with a washrag or anything. So...yeah. It's amazing. Plus my skin feels soft. I never have to wear moisturizer.

In conclusion, it's AWESOME. Get some.

One of my other favorite beauty weapons also comes from the shelves of Trader Joe's.

As you can see in the picture (that I didn't take), this stuff'll run you about $7. And it's awesome. I use it primarily for makeup removal (in the event that there are still remnants after I get out of the shower) and intense moisturizing. If I have particularly chapped lips or dry patches of skin on my hands, I'll rub some in before I go to bed. And it's freaking awesome. It's also fantastic as an eye makeup remover. AND-- now this one may sound far-fetched, but I'm throwing it out there.

A few years ago, around the time I was turning 29, I started seriously stressing because I was getting fine wrinkles around my eyes. Crow's feet, I suppose. I was so upset! I started using random eye creams and stuff, hoping to reverse the damage. Nothing really worked and then I just got used to the crow's feet and quit trying to fix them. Fast forward a few months-- I started using this stuff to take off my eye makeup (this was prior to discovering the face wash, so I was still requiring makeup remover after I washed my face). Now fast forward a few years...I use this stuff on my eyes maybe twice a week-ish. The oil face wash every night. Other than makeup, I don't use any other face products regularly-- no moisturizer, creams, lotions, etc.

I don't have wrinkles around my eyes anymore.

SO. I'm not trying to make any miracle claims here...correlation doesn't necessarily imply causation and all that. BUT. You draw your own conclusions. I've drawn mine, and I'll be sticking with my TJ's face regime, thankyouverymuch.

One more. This is getting really long!

I love some nail polish. I own an obscene amount of the stuff...and I keep buying more. Wanna know one of my favorite brands?

Ulta's store brand. Seriously. Cheap old store brand polish. Wanna know why?

This is my hand this morning. "But Erika!! It's chipping!! This isn't a good picture of a product you supposedly like!"

True. It is chipping. But you know how long that polish has been on there?

TEN DAYS.

This is the TENTH day of this polish!!! And that is ALL the chipping that there is!! I didn't use any fancy topcoat or basecoat. I haven't touched it up. Just a few layers of Ulta's regular ol' polish that I got when they were 5 for $5!!! So like...A DOLLAR. The truth is, I don't even really like this color. I've been wishing it would chip so that I could justify taking it off and putting on a better color. But DANG if this stuff isn't lasting forever! I'm leaving it on just so that I can see how long it'll go for!!

I do love some Essie and OPI. I do. But seriously, they look good for MAYBE 3 or 4 days before there are serious chips. This Ulta stuff is consistently awesome. I've been using it (not this particular color, but just the line in general) for over a year and have probably 8-10 different colors...and it always impresses me. Sure, the color selection isn't as amazing as higher-end brands. But the price is really, really right. Full price, these are I think $6ish. I wouldn't buy them at that, though. They are REALLY frequently on sale for $2 or $3, so I'd just wait and stock up then.

Trust me. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

So there you go. If you were super ambitious, you could try out ALL THREE of my favorite beauty steals for less than $15 (assuming you have access to a TJ's). I mean...you're welcome. You're just really welcome. ;) And now that I've been nice and told you MY favorite steals...quid pro quo. Your turn! Let's all save money together! Yippeeee!!

  1. Oooh, so fascinated about this face wash! Did you have any flare ups when you first started using it, or was it an easy transition?

    1. No, no flare ups. I pretty much transitioned straight from the OCM to this and it was pretty seamless. From the very beginning I loved how this stuff made my face feel and skin look- just had to get used to the scent.

  2. You can guess what I'm about to say.... We don't have a trader joe's. I know. Pathetic for a Big Ten University town that we have such a lack of shopping!! I'm bummed, both of those products sounded awesome!

  3. Ulta nail polish is the only kind I buy!! I have about 50 bottles of it ;) I was tempted to get more last week for $2/bottle, but I resisted!!

  4. Wow! I'm really impressed with that nail polish!

I have to use a special cleanser for my face that has no coconut or foaming agent so I'm hesitant to try the wash, but I'm REALLY interested in the oil you rub around your eyes. Definitely have to pick that one up! A 32 year old should NOT have crows feet and yet I do... I bet it would take care of wax residue for home waxing, too.

  5. I'm SO glad you posted this. We don't live near a TJ's, but are going to one next weekend in Dallas. I'll totally browse the spa aisle (an aisle I've somehow neglected during my TJ visits!)

  6. Now I'm really wishing there was a Trader Joe's in Canada. Why do you guys get all the good stores??? Also, we don't have Ulta so you will probably never move to Canada :)

  7. I am SO excited to try this TJ's face wash! I've been desperate to find a new cleanser for my face (why did no one warn me that turning 30 would start more skin problems than I ever had as a teenager?!), and this one seems like it could be right up my alley. I've tried moisturizing with coconut oil and sweet almond oil, but wasn't crazy about either one on my face. Neither were my pores. Still use it on my arms/legs, but now I can't wait to try the jojoba oil, too. Woohoo! I love new beauty finds--thanks for the tip(s)!!!

  8. Weird... I really don't love ulta nail polish... it takes too many coats and the more coats required the more I mess up. : ( You kind of sold me on TJ's face wash stuff... except that I don't wash my face. I know, I know. My night time ritual is, well, to get in bed. When it comes time for creams and masks I'm going to fail miserably. I buy fancy face wash periodically thinking it the smell or cool bottle will make me wash my face more... and it never does. I'm glad you found some steals so that you have money to spend on Zooey's favorite lip gloss!

  9. That nail polish is IMPRESSIVE! We also do not have Trader Joes here. Hmph. Now I feel the need to find the closest one and road trip it on over there.

  10. I want to get in the car and hit up TJs and Ulta now. Ten day nail polish....that's amazing! Thanks for sharing.

  11. The Ulta Brand nail polish is my absolute fav! I will not buy anything else now that I have tasted and seen that it is GOOD! I wish I had a Trader Joe's close by. It's quite a trek from my place to there. However, someday, when I make my way I will check out those products. I have been searching and searching for something for my skin! Thank for sharing :)

  12. I've been looking for a better facewash-- clearasil isn't cutting it! LOL

  13. No way you have bad skin!!! I don't believe you!

  14. Okay, now I seriously want to go to TJ's and buy your face wash and jojoba oil! That's stuff looks awesome!

  15. I have never been in a Trader Joe's. Never even heard of it until maybe this past year. Pretty sure I'm deprived.

  16. Girl, I've got terrible skin, too. Terrible. I'm trying the somewhat no chemicals routine right now. I'll have to check out the TJ face wash next time I'm there.

  17. Colorado does not have a Trader Joes (sad face), but we do have milk delivery! Maybe I'll have to order some of those products, because I feel totally lost in my make-up routine and beauty routine. I don't know what to use, and nothing ever seems to be really good. As for the nail polish, I love Essie colors, but they are the worst for chipping! I think that they last maybe a day or two at the most on my fast growing nails. Thanks for the suggestions, I am so using them!

  18. We live in south Minneapolis, but there really isn't a TJ close by. In the past this has been great for our pocket book - but now I really want to swing by one and check out these great products you described. That Jojoba oil sounds fantastic - my skin is super dry all winter long. Thanks!

  19. I need to go purchase some jojoba oil ASAP. I didn't have much luck with that cleanser, but I really wanted it to work! If the oil goes the route of the cleanser for me I can just pass it onto you. :) Instead of the TJ cleanser I'm using this deathly-smelling sulfer potion from the dermo, that gets the job done. Other than the temporary rotten egg smell.

  20. I cry a little every for not living near a TJ's anymore. (But they are building one!) sooo....I might really need to take you up on that offer to ship. Cause....I live right near a whole foods but they probably sell the same kind of thing for Ike $30.
Also have you heard of using raw honey as a mask? Someone I follow on Instagram does it every night and I googled it and it aparently has awesome skin benefits including treating acne and even helping to heal scars. So yeah, I'll be trying it. Il let you know if its as miraculous as some folks claim it to be!

  21. I'm totally headed to Trader Joe's to get that stuff. Great recommendation! Thanks!

  22. Okay. I've followed your blog for years and never commented, but I need your advice! This post inspired me to go pick up some TJ's face wash, and I've been using it for a few days. I love the way it makes my skin feel, but it BURNS me eyes. Even when I avoid a 5cm radius around my eyes. Did this happen to you at all? If so, do you have any secrets to get it to NOT happen? Maybe I'm alone in the weird eye reaction. You're clearly an expert in all things related to this face wash, so I'm certain you'll have an answer ;)

    1. Yikes!! Oh no!! I'm going to have to say that I haven't noticed it burning my eyes...and I rub it ALL over my eyelids/lashes to get my makeup off, so I'm not going to any special trouble to avoid the eye area. So I have no idea! I always have my contacts on when I use it, I wonder if that could somehow be protecting my eyes from stinging?? I have no idea, though!! I am so sorry, though...not many things are worth burning eyes, that's for sure!!

    2. Maybe I'll try wearing goggles when I wash my face. I'm gonna make this face wash happen.
