do YOU tell?

So here's my current dilemma. One of them, anyway. I never limit myself to only one personal dilemma at a time. Oh, and I'm expecting you to give me advice, so...get those typing fingers ready.

Do you blog about when you're out of town/on vacation?

Because you ALL know (you better, or you're not my friend anymore) I'm going on a sweet vacation this summer. But I haven' t said when, specifically...because I'm all why advertise the days when my house will be unoccupied? Ya know, to the stalkers and robbers who I'm sure are frequent readers of my blog. Even though **NOTE TO ALL POTENTIAL ROBBERS** my house will not be unoccupied-- we have a house sitter and a big scary dog and a cat that likes to poop right next to anyone that will give him a pat. And I'm pretty sure my house sitter is an ex-SEAL. With a gun. So you'd be a dumbass to come try and rob me. But even still-- I feel like people (other bloggers) tend to not say when they're going to be away until after the fact. And I'm cool with that.

BUT!!

The thing is-- hello, when I'm on vacation, I WANT TO BE RUBBING IT IN YOUR FACE THE WHOLE TIME. I want to be Tweeting pictures. I want to be blowing up the Instagram feed. I want to be social-media-documenting (is there any other kind?) every photogenic moment of my days. OK I'm exaggerating-- I actually hope not to be glued to my phone the whole time (can you even use your 4G in Mexico, actually?) (also, I don't want to ruin my phone with sand) (also I'm thinking about spending some time actually talking to Matt. Maybe.)...but a tasteful photo, Tweet, or blog blurb detailing my views, food, beverages, and general giddiness each day? I really want that. But that sorta negates the whole "not saying I'm out of town" rule, right?

So...what would/do you do? Keep it on the DL? Blab it for all the world (and robbers) to see? More importantly-- what do you think I should do? Share away!!

  1. Last time we went on vacation (which was eons ago) I bragged to everyone - even the criminals stalking my blog - that we'd be in Me-hi-co so they shouldn't expect to hear from for a solid 10 days (that was before I had an iPhone).
I never even thought about it as broadcasting our empty house to robbers, but since we don't have anything steal worthy and have insurance I wouldn't be to worried anyway.
Selfishly I want to read ALL about your romantic getaway, but I would also hate to be the reason you don't have a television anymore.

  2. If the robbers really are stalking/reading your blog to figure out when you are gone, they are going to know when you stop making blog posts for a long period of time. So, you better do some decoy posts to keep them off the trail! :)
And then when you get home you can simultaneously (sp?) make us seriously jealous with your pictures and basically tell those robbers, "BOOYA! I tricked you, silly robbers!"

  3. You're good. I didn't say anything because I was alone for a whole month in a sketch neighborhood with a baby that I really didn't want anyone to kidnap :) Brag away!!

  4. Blab all about it! And post lots of pictures everyday!
Remember my mantra: "Pics or it didn't happen."
Have fun and don't worry about robbers, they're probably on vacation too :)

  5. I tend to err on the side of "oh, everything will probably be ok." So I say go for it.

  6. Your house sitter is pretty intimidating...

  7. If I had a house sitter, I would TOTALLY advertise my vacation to the world!

  8. I say blog about it anyway, especially if you have a house sitter! But be warned that we will all hate you for your rubbing-it-in-our-faces documenting!

  9. I schedule posts while we're away as if I have a massive following, but I know I'm just being a chicken. My mom on the other hand posts about it from the second she begins packing and continues to torture everyone until they arrive home. Have fun whenever your vacation is!

  10. When we went out of the country last year I had several post scheduled to go up while we were gone. Basically I acted like we were leaving the next week when in reality, we would already be home then. We did have a house sitter lined up, but it was a single college girl and I didn't want her to have to worry about strangers knowing we were gone.

Whether you post when you're actually gone or the week when you get back, you're still going to be able to rub it in our faces! :)

  11. I never even think of it. I just write about it. But my blog isn't popular like yours so I don't worry about too many random people reading. But I say go for it (which it seems you decided to do!) Can't wait to hear all about it!

  12. I used to be that way, too. I still don't love it when Ian posts things to twitter that are blatantly saying where we are, but it's SO unusual for something to happen that the one time you see it in the news, it was the chick's "friend" who knew where she lived. I say don't worry about it, enjoy it!

  15. I wouldn't worry about it unless you have a blog with a lot of people who follow you in your area. Like everyone knows which city Kelly of Kelly's Korner lives in and she probably has a lot of people who live nearby, who aren't friends, who follow her. And you have a house sitter which means you are even less likely to get robbed. Because my take is if the robbers want to get you they know both you and Matt work everyday and why wouldn't they just do it then? (Do I know how to make you feel better or what?!?!)

Besides I want to hear all about your awesome vacation so I can pretend I'm on vacation too as opposed to being at home like I normally am.

I love comments almost as much as I love Mexican food. Seriously.
